- Signal Corp Officers are chiefly responsible for military communications.military image by Alexey Klementiev from Fotolia.com
The U.S. military is divided into several factions, each responsible for certain tasks. Effective communication and intelligence, therefore, is critical to the success of U.S. military operations. The officers charged with providing communication and support to other divisions of the U.S. military are the Signal Officers. - Army Signal Corp Officers must ensure that communications remain secure so that enemy combatants do not intercept sensitive information about U.S. military operations (including specific information about troop placement and movements). Signal Corp Officers are trained in encrypting communications and in setting up secure methods of transmitting communications to U.S. military personnel.
- According to Villanova University, "The success of the Army depends largely on its ability to move, shoot and communicate. And if you can't communicate, you can't do the other two." Signal Officers, therefore, must not only ensure that communications remain secure, but they must set up communication systems. This means that they must use cables, satellite systems, radio frequencies and other communication methods to transmit and receive communications at all aspects of a military operation, including at the base itself and in the battlefield.
- Additionally, Signal Corps Officers with electrical engineering backgrounds work to research and develop new methods of communication and new methods of securing communications. These Signal Officers stay at the cutting edge of technology to keep U.S. military operations running smoothly and to provide other Signal Corp Officers with methods to keep communications safe and secure.
