Schizophrenia is one of the most devastating mental disorders under which the patient has to face various problems like hallucinations, nightmares, illusions and various other similar issues. This type of psychological disorder changes the patient's natural perception of reality. These illusions can bring about various changes in the patient's behavior and emotions.
The term ‘Schizophrenia' literally means split mind and thus the disease is several times misunderstood to be a split personality disorder. A person suffering from this disorder starts showing the symptoms from the early teens to 25 years of age. The early signs of Schizophrenia are categories into positive, negative and cognitive symptoms of Schizophrenia. The positive signs of the disorder are referred so because these induce positive feelings in the person. He starts believing that he is a well known personality. He may also start feeling like he possesses some supernatural powers. Some patients sense someone or something controlling their actions. Patients with such symptoms often find difficulty in speaking or expressing what they exactly feel. Even when they are insisted to talk, they refrain from interacting with anyone.
In contrast with the positive symptoms, the negative signs are the ones in which the patient feels an absence of something that should be present. The patient may become highly de-motivated, lethargic and laid back. When asked for something, they look perplexed, dull and emotionless. They show no interest in socializing or sharing their feelings with anyone else. In many cases, it has been observed that such people fail to enjoy the activities that used to bring pleasure and enjoyment to them previously. As the most noticeable change that occurs due to such negative feelings is reduction in the energy of the person, this disease is mostly taken as the person's unwilling attitude to take responsibility or spend some energy in doing something. Thus, many times the disease is not diagnosed at an early stage.
The cognitive symptoms of Schizophreniaare similar to the negative signs and thus these are also very difficult to identify. The patients find difficulty in focusing on something, even if they somehow succeed in receiving some information, they fail to use it in a proper way. This lack of information processing ability of the patient makes a huge impact upon his decision making power. The memorizing and concentrating ability of the person is also affected a great deal as a result of such effects of the mental disorder. Troubles like sleep disorders, mood swings and acute depression attacks may also be observed in such patients. Gradually, such variations in their natural thinking ability will also affect their looks and people will start noticing something unusual about them even without interacting with them.
These are the three types of Schizophrenia symptoms. If any such symptoms are observed in a person, he should be immediately taken to a physician or a psychiatrist so that the exact type of disease can be diagnosed.
