Praxis Paraprofessional Certification

    Function

    • The Educational Testing Service (ETS) provides the Praxis assessment tool for those seeking a paraprofessional position. The Praxis standardized test for paraprofessional certification satisfies the necessary job requirements outlined by the U.S. Department of Education. Referred to as the ParaPro Assessment, this test measures reading, writing and math competency of paraprofessionals. Performance on the test also reflects ability to demonstrate knowledge of these subjects in a classroom setting.

    Significance

    • In 2002, government legislation reformed the education system in America by increasing the standards for teacher and paraprofessional performance. According to the U.S. Department of Education, the No Child Left Behind Act requires paraprofessionals to demonstrate knowledge of and ability to assist in instructing reading, writing and mathematics. You must pass the ParaPro Assessment before you seek employment as a paraprofessional.

    Features

    • ETS developed the ParaPro Assessment with an advisory committee of paraprofessionals and teachers who review and update each new edition constantly. The test consists of 90 multiple-choice questions to be completed in 2 ½ hours. As of 2010, a $45 non-refundable fee is required to take the ParaPro Assessment. Contact your local school district and ask if they offer the Internet version of the test. If not, ETS testing centers offer paper-based tests four times a year.

    Considerations

    • Prepare yourself for the ParaPro Assessment well in advance of your registered test date. By passing the test the first time, you avoid paying the $45 fee again to re-test. Study all relevant subject matter and time yourself when taking a practice test. ETS sells a study guide and practice test through their online store. Also, try not to feel discouraged if you fail the test. You always have the option to register for the next test date.

    Requirements

    • No official passing score exists for the ParaPro Assessment. Instead, each state individually determines a minimum score requirement. Check with your local board of education office for your state's passing score. Approximately four weeks after the test date, ETS mails official score reports to you and your designated score recipient.
