    Proper Foods

    • According to Smith, the diet should be high in protein and low in fat. Foods such as lean turkey, chicken, tuna and steak are acceptable choices. Complex carbohydrates also play an important role. Eat fruits, vegetables and whole-wheat pasta; steer clear of white breads and pastas. Twelve- and nine-grain bagels and breads are more healthful than breads and bagels featuring only one type of grain, Smith says.

    Multiple Meals

    • Those on the Army diet should have five or six small meals a day, suggests Smith, consumed at three-hour intervals. Your metabolism tends to slow when your stomach is growling, so keeping yourself satiated is important to becoming or staying lean.

    Exercise

    • According to Lt. Gen. Mark Hertling of the Army's Training and Doctrine Command, the Army is in the business of producing tactical athletes. This is accomplished through proper eating and intense exercise, to the point that soldiers are given the opportunity to use professional trainers, strength and endurance coaches, and physical therapy.

    Lots of Water

    • Smith recommends copious amounts of water while you are on the Army diet. Water not only fills you up, but it keeps you from becoming dehydrated and helps you digest the foods you eat. A good rule of thumb is to have eight 8-ounce glasses of water per day.
