- Each state mandates approximately 40 hours of instruction prior to testing for a health insurance license. This can be done in classroom settings or self-paced study over the Internet. Topics include insurance laws and ethical practices, various types of health insurance, reading and writing policies, and Medicare and Medicaid.
- A licensed agent also is required to take continuing education credits to renew his license. These can be courses that allow the agent to specialize in an area such as long-term care insurance or more general such as how to better understand policies.
- Each insurance company has their own internal training program for both new and experienced agents. New agents learn the ins and outs of the company's specific policies and how to sell them. Experienced agents are trained on techniques such as how to sell multiple policies to a family.
