- 1). Draw the standard structure of the number line. Draw the horizontal line with an arrow at each end.
- 2). Determine the range of numbers you want to count. For example, you may want to count from zero to five.
- 3). Draw a vertical line for each of the numbers you want to count. Each vertical line corresponds to one number. Therefore, if you want to count from zero to five, you will draw six vertical lines evenly spaced on the number line.
- 4). Label the number line by putting the numbers in order. For example, write zero under the first vertical line at the left, 1 under the next, 2 under the next, three under the next, four under the next and five under the last.
- 5). Read each number under the number line from left to right. This will allow you to count with the visual aid of a number line.
