- 1). Purchase beef at one of the over 20 wet markets located throughout Penang. Most markets are open in the mornings from 7:00 AM until 11:00 AM. A few, such as the Tunjung Bungah Market, are open in the evenings. The Pulau Tikus Wet market, locally known as the rich man's market, is where most expatriates and Westerners shop. There are multiple stalls that sell beef in these wet markets. It is best to frequent one stall once you have found one you like so that the butcher will become familiar with you and what you need.
- 2). Tell the vendor how big a piece of beef you would like to purchase. The meat is sold by the gram and the price will be determined after the final piece has been weighed.
- 3). Ask the vendor to cut the meat any way you would like. If you want it chopped for stew or scored for grilling, they will be happy to take care of it for you.
- 1). Purchase imported meats from Australia, New Zealand and the United States from a local butcher shop in Penang. They will have nice cuts of meat that include tenderloins and steaks for grilling. There is a shop located in Hillside called Pok Brother and one in Tanjong Taokong called Muthu & Nissi.
- 2). Let the butcher know how much beef you would like to purchase. The meat can be purchased in large or small quantities. You can get an entire beef tenderloin or just a few fillets, depending on what you need for your meal. If you have questions about what type of beef to purchase, you can tell the butcher what you are cooking and they will make suggestions.
- 3). Have the butcher cut the meat to your preference before leaving the shop. The butchers are there to help you and customer service in Penang is very good.
