How to Improve an HDTV Picture

    • 1). Open your television's "Display" menu. If you are unsure of how to do this, consult your television's user manual.

    • 2). Adjust the "Backlight" setting. Your backlight will act as the basis for all of your other adjustments, as it controls the intensity of light that the television emits. Set this to suit your eyes in a dark room so that the light does not cause eyestrain. Many plasma televisions do not have a backlight setting, and instead use contrast to control the output of light.

    • 3). Adjust your "Contrast" setting, turning it all the way up, and gradually turning it down until you are able to make out the details in a high-exposure area. It is helpful to freeze frame an image containing a white area with a fair amount of detail -- such as wrinkles, grains, or shadows -- when you adjust your contrast.

    • 4). Adjust the "Color" or "Saturation" setting, by turning it up all the way, and gradually reducing it until you find a level you are comfortable with. Using a still image of a fair-skinned person will allow you to more accurately adjust this setting.

    • 5). Reduce the "Sharpness" setting as low as you feel comfortable with. This setting is designed for non-HD signals and may degrade the quality of your HDTV's High Definition image.
