Surviving With Diabetes

I have type II Diabetes.
Diabetes is a debilitating disease for me.
It causes me to have extreme thirst and to be sleepy after consuming foods.
I am alert and functioning one minute and after eating can go totally the opposite.
Diabetes is a metabolic disorder.
After eating, your food converts to sugar for energy and almost everything we eat has sugar in it.
Diabetes for me makes me feel very lethargic after eating, almost like a feeling of being drugged.
Sometimes I can barely keep my eyes open after consuming a meal.
I have changed my diet drastically because of how I feel after eating but I can still feel very sleepy even after eating a salad so I really can't blame what I eat because for me it really doesn't matter.
I also suffer from sleep apnea and having the two disorders together is life altering.
Exercise can help some after eating but the trend will come back when it is time to eat again.
Having this disease causes me to crave carbs and sugar, mainly carbs for me.
When my glucose levels are high I can tell before I test my blood because my vision will blur and my body will ache and I will have an increase in yeast infections.
Insulin is a hormone made inside the pancreas from beta cells.
In type II Diabetes insulin doesn't work effectively.
The insulin helps your body to use or store the glucose.
Without it working correctly, your body won't be able to use glucose for energy thus making you feel tired or sleepy after a meal.
If the sugar doesn't convert to energy you get the opposite effect, unenergized or what some people view as lazy.
I can almost guarantee my Diabetes developed in childhood.
I can recall many times being really thirsty and having cravings, especially in the middle of the night, for certain types of high carb sugary foods.
I also am genetically predisposed since my grandmother has it.
She takes insulin shots and I take the pill metformin.
Did you know the human body produces and disposes of acetone and people with Diabetes produce larger amounts of it? It is present in the blood and urine and characterized by an odor.
The most common symptoms of Diabetes is increased thirst, urination, and hunger.
The goal is to regulate your blood sugar for a better quality of life and life expectancy and you can do this by diet, regular exercise, testing of blood sugars and taking your medicine.
Good luck to anyone suffering from this horrible disease.
God bless.
