The power of Super Mario and his brother Luigi was one thing that made the 1980's stand apart from any other time period.
The mere fact that we were able to play a video game at home to the graphics quality that Super Mario Bros had at that time made the Nintendo Entertainment System the most powerful piece of plastic in the world.
Throughout the 1980's kids and adults alike made round trips to their local arcades to play the best games of the time period.
But, when Nintendo came out and the kids were able to stay at home, the arcades started to suffer.
However, it wasn't until the 1990's when the arcade was fully replaced with home entertainment.
And sure enough, Super Mario Brothers and Nintendo was leading the way with sequels and other great games and game systems.
The power of Super Mario Brothers still sends a chill down gamers backs when new, innovative products come onto the market scene.
For example, the new iPad just debuted to the praises of many.
This product is supposedly revolutionary.
According to Apple, the iPad can do it all, like email, watch videos, play games, cruise the internet, all while being the size of a school tablet.
They hype is out there and everyone is excited, but can it live up to the thrill that Super Mario Brothers had back in the 1980's? If you travel through the internet and type in Super Mario Brothers into a search engine, you will suddenly be inundated with hundreds of sites that have it's flash based equivalent to the original game.
Super Mario Brothers flare is not going away.
Its popularity seems to be drawn from it's unique sci-fi like level design, originality, and the fact that the everyday person, Mario the plumber, is the main hero who saves the Princess makes any body playing the game feel like they can too, be a hero.
You will know if a product will be successful if people become obsessed with its originality.
Like Super Mario Brothers, any new product introduced must be original, creative, and fun.
If it does not compare to the Mario Bros, then it will be just a fad.
Look at everything that is popular in today's society, the Internet, Cell Phone, iPod, flat screen Television, and soon to be 3D everything, what do these all have in common? They are fun and exciting, at least in the beginning, but you can never seem not to put those fun things away.
For me, and for many people, especially gamers, we will always compare everything new that happens in the future, to Super Mario Brothers.
If we don't have that feeling of being a everyday hero like Mario and his hardly mentioned brother Luigi, then the new product will be just that, a product and we will wait for a better one to come down the pike.
