How to Replace a Vent Fan

    • 1). Turn off the power to the vent fan circuit by locating the correct circuit breaker in the circuit breaker panel and flipping it to the "off" position.

    • 2). Remove the grille from the bottom of the exhaust fan. Gently pull it down and then pinch the springs together to remove it from the vent fan housing.

    • 3). Climb into the attic and disconnect the duct work from the fan. Metal duct is typically screwed to the vent fan connector, and flexible duct is attached with a draw band. A draw band is a metal clamp that tightens and loosens by adjusting the screw on the band.

    • 4). Open up the electrical box on the vent fan and disconnect the wiring. Find the wire nuts and unscrew them. The wires should then untwist and become free.

    • 5). Unscrew the vent fan from the ceiling joists. The vent fan should then lift up out of the hole in the ceiling.

    • 6). Lower the new vent fan into the hole until it is flush with the ceiling. Fasten it to the ceiling joists with screws.

    • 7). Connect the electrical wiring up to the house wiring. The black wires will be wire nutted together, as will the white wires and the green wires.

    • 8). Connect the duct work to the vent fan. If you have metal duct, simply screw it to the fan outlet. Flexible duct will need to be clamped down with a metal draw band.

    • 9). Head down to the bathroom and put the grille onto the fan. Pinch the springs together on the grille and insert it into the vent fan housing. Push upward until the grille is pulled tight to the ceiling by the springs.

Turn the power back on to the electrical circuit and your fan should now be operational.
