The Epstein Barr Virus (EBV) is a latent virus that can turn into chronic EBV if the body's immune system is suppressed.
Fortunately in the majority of people the infection is short-lived, lasting from 2 - 4 weeks.
However about 6% of people experience at least one relapse of the illness.
If recurrent Epstein Barr lasts more than 6 months it is said to be in the chronic state.
So why do some people get recurrent Epstein Barr? The answer usually lies in the health of the immune system.
If immunity is suppressed because of ongoing stress, poor dietary habits, smoking or an underlying condition like lung disease, a chronic bacterial infection, HIV/Aids, transplant surgery etc then Epstein Barr can take hold.
You can also be genetically predisposed to poor immunity.
Researchers at the University of NSW, Australia recently did some tests on people who had either bounced back quickly from Epstein Barr virus, or who had suffered from a prolonged bout of the infection.
It was found that the activity of a group of 35 genes (out of 30,000 studied) determined if recovery was going to be rapid or prolonged.
The mind-body connection has also been pinpointed as a reason why chronic EBV develops.
Louise Hay, author of the best selling book "You Can Heal Your Life" claims that Epstein Barr is triggered by a fear of not being good enough and pushing beyond ones limits in order to prove oneself.
I know in my clinics I see many chronic EBV patients who are typical Type A personalities.
These patients are perfectionists who strive to be the best and won't rest till they're there.
If you think you take on too much and your health is suffering as a result, then slowing down and having a chat with a counselor would be a positive first step.
If you are suffering from chronic EBV then the good news is that there is a lot you can do with natural therapies to accelerate your recovery.
An immune-boosting diet, vitamins, minerals, herbs, graded exercise and stress management can go a long way to getting you back to a full and healthy life.
