How to Receive the Federal Extension of Unemployment Benefits in Texas

    • 1). Use all of your regular Texas unemployment benefits. You must file your weekly claims until you use all of your awarded benefits from your regular unemployment claim in Texas.

    • 2). Continue looking for employment each week that you are unemployed. This is a requirement for receiving regular unemployment benefits in Texas, as well as the extended benefits.

    • 3). Remain not eligible for other unemployment benefits, such as from another state. For example, if you accepted some work in another state and were laid off, you would then be eligible for unemployment in that state, which would make you not eligible for the extended Texas benefits.

    • 4). Wait for mail notification from the Texas Workforce Commission regarding your eligibility for the extended benefits. If you are eligible, an application will be included with the notification letter. The application is almost identical to your initial unemployment application. It will ask when you initially became unemployed and what steps you have been taking to get employment. You will also need to list your past employer details, like in the initial application.

    • 5). Look for claim forms to start appearing in your mailbox again, if you still qualify for unemployment benefits. The extended benefit claim forms are the same forms you used for the regular Texas unemployment weekly claims. Fill them out the same way. If you are not eligible for the extended benefits, you will instead get a letter that lets you know why.
