What Are the Colors & Symbols on Nevada's State Flag?

    1905 Flag

    • In 1905, the state of Nevada adopted its first official state flag. On the first flag, which has a solid blue background, the word "Nevada" appears in silver on the left-hand corner of the flag. Above and below the word "Nevada" are two rows each of silver and gold stars. There is also a larger silver star on each side of the word "Nevada." The total 36 stars on the flag represent Nevada as the 36th state to enter the Union in 1864. Above and below the rows of stars are the words "Silver" and "Gold," printed in their respective colors. These words reflect Nevada's two famous mineral resources.

    1915 Flag

    • In 1915, the Nevada state legislature adopted a new flag design. In this design, the words "Silver" and "Gold" are noticeably absent from the flag. Instead, an image of Nevada's coat of arms appears on the flag with the word "Nevada" in silver above it. The coat of arms is a colorful design featuring a team of silver miners and a quartz mill in the foreground and green mountains and a yellow sun in the background. Directly under the coat of arms are the words "All For Our Country" in gold. The silver and gold stars that were on the 1905 flag are now repositioned; an arc of gold stars stretches over the top of the coat of arms, while an arc of silver stars rests under the coat of arms. The background of the flag remains blue.

    1929 Flag

    • In 1926, the Nevada legislature chose a third flag design that would emerge in 1929 as the official state flag. Louis Schellbach III entered his flag design into the 1926 state flag contest and won. On the "Schellbach" flag, a wreath of green sagebrush with golden flowers replaces the coat of arms. Instead of having 36 stars, the "Schellbach" flag has one large silver star in the center of the wreath. The words "Battle Born" appear in black on a gold scroll at the top of the wreath. "Battle Born" represents Nevada's entry into the Union during the Civil War. The "Schellbach" flag has one major omission; it lacks the word "Nevada." Nevada legislature set out to amend this by placing the state name under the sagebrush leaves. However, as a result of legislative error, the word "Nevada" appeared between the points of the silver star and not under the sagebrush leaves.

    Current Flag

    • In 1991, Nevada legislature decided to correct the third flag design and reposition the word "Nevada" on the state flag. The flag now has the state name in gold beneath the silver star instead of between the star's points. The background of the flag is a cobalt blue. The wreath of green sagebrush with golden flowers remains in the flag's upper left-hand corner since sagebrush is Nevada's state flower. In the center of the sagebrush is the large silver star to represent the mineral silver. The words "Battle Born" remain on the yellow scroll at the top of the wreath.
