The 1978 Cherokee is a rugged, full-size sport utility vehicle manufactured by the Jeep Division of the American Motors Corporation. The 1978 Cherokee comes in a variety of styles, colors and performance enhancers that add a bit of sportiness to the Cherokee's strong design. - The 1978 Jeep Cherokee comes in two body styles, the two-door model and the four-door design, both of which have the traditional, boxy style. Both the two-door and the four-door Cherokees have an average height of 66.9 inches, a width of 75.6 inches and a length of 183.5 inches, with a wheelbase of 108.7 inches. Third-row seating is not an option on the 1978 Jeep Cherokee; however, second-row seating is offered and provides 37 inches of leg room.
- The 1978 Cherokee comes in a variety of styles and could be custom painted to suit the wishes of the buyer at purchase. Standard colors include Alpine White, Pewter Gray, Classic Black and Sand Tan. Additional neutral style colors and choices consisted of Midnight Blue, Khaki and Captain Blue, which was just a shade or two lighter than Midnight Blue. Bolder color options include bright yellows and vivid reds like Sunshine Yellow, Firecracker Red, Claret and Sun Orange, which has a more earthy, coral shade.
- Because Jeeps were originally designed as military vehicles, they are well known for their powerful engines. One of the 1978 Cherokee's most popular features was its engine options. The 1978 Cherokee comes standard with a 258 cubic inch, 4.2-liter, AMC in-line six-cylinder engine; however, drivers could upgrade to more power. Engine upgrades include a choice of two V-8 options, a 360 cubic inch, 5.9-liter engine or a 401 cubic inch, 6.6-liter engine, which offers 280 horsepower and 400 ft-lbs of torque.
