Home & Garden Do It Yourself

How to Pressure Wash Your Home

During spring cleaning everyone remembers to clean the bedrooms, the bathroom, closets etc., but how about the outside of the house? That gets dirty too. Daily your home is assaulted by particulates from the atmosphere such as molds, pollen, spores, dirt etc. Shouldn't you take as much care to the outside of your home as you do to the inside? After all, the outside is the first thing people see when they come to visit you. I want to tell you how to clean the outside of your home to make your spring cleaning plans complete. The general steps are: Inspecting the outside of your home and assessing how thorough a cleaning it needs. Then you should cover all plants and other materials around the house. You will then need to assemble the equipment you will be using (see below). Next, you will need some kind of a soft bristle brush to scrub from the outside of your home things that a pressure washing wand itself will not clean up. Finally, you will be rinsing the house of debris and materials with the pressure washing wand you have scrubbed away the nasty particulates.

What you will Need

€ A garden hose
€ Tarp - Needed to cover plants, flowers and other items outside your home.
€ Pressure washer - 3000 psi is recommended in most cases.
€ Extension brush - For scrubbing higher areas.
€ Bleaching material - For spraying down the house
€ A de-greasing material - For scrubbing the gutters. (You might as well clean them while you are at it.)
€ Protective eye wear - To protect yourself from flying debris.
€ Some sturdy boots - So that you don't slip.
€ Old clothes - Loose but comfortable fitting work clothes should do it.

Inspect First

The rain doesn't clean your car when it falls nor does it clean the outside of your home. Rain and the other elements leave dust, dirt, grim, pollen, spores, mold etc. stuck to the outside of your home. These are the kinds of things you are looking for when you begin the process of examining the outside of your home prior to washing it. If you have many trees around your home your house may be especially dirtiest on a particular side of your home.

The Actual Washing

After you have gathered together all the materials you will need, covered your plants and done your visual inspection of your home you will be ready to start washing. You will begin by attaching your garden hose to the washer and then unlacing the coupler on the pressure washing house and inserting the coupler inside the machine. Hook the pressure washing gun up to the pressure washing hose. Turn on the water from your home, turn the pressure washing machine to the on position and you should be ready to begin.

Rinsing the Home

You should begin by rinsing the home or essentially wetting it down first all over. Start from the top and let the detergent begin to fall down the sides of the home. When you are done with the rinsing, you should wait for about 5 - 10 minutes and then begin scrubbing the outside of your home with the extension brush. Make sure you clean the gutters, around the windows, the trims and the siding. Also make sure that you gotten all the mildew and mold from the outside of the home as they can irritate people with allergies living in the home. You should now have a clean exterior to your home to match your interior spring cleaning.
