How to Hunt Morel Mushrooms in Indiana

    • 1). Pick the right time of year to begin Morel mushroom hunting. In Indiana, the three Morel variety bloom during different times throughout the spring. The Black Morels bloom first, during late March and early April. Yellow Morels bloom during late April and into mid-May. Yellow Morels begin turning grey as the season closes. The Deliciosa Morels fruit during the entire Morel season.

    • 2). Prepare for the hunt. Dress appropriately with pants, a long sleeve shirt and comfortable tennis shoes or hiking boots. Morel hunters often find themselves crawling along the ground, under and over piles of brush. Insect repellent is also important. Spring time in Indiana notes the beginning of tick season while other biting insects are emerging from their winter state.

    • 3). Gather hunting tools; a bag to collect mushrooms and a long stick. The bag can be a simple grocery sack, paper or plastic. Some people suggest using a burlap or mesh bag to allow spores to fall off the mushrooms for future growth. The long stick is used to brush back debris in hard to reach places.

    • 4). Search wooded areas rich with a variety of tree species; Elm, White Pine, Tulip Trees, Ash, Shag-bark Hickories and old Apple trees. Finding Morels in Indiana is not limited to specific wooded areas. Morel mushrooms grow from spores and simply need a place where they can land and remain undisturbed. Rotting roots of a dying Elm and rotten fruit fallen from fruit trees provide essential nutrients for Morel mushrooms. These mushrooms can also be spotted in decomposing vegetation. Search areas with dead or fallen trees and under last years decomposing leaf piles.

    • 5). Continue searching immediate locations where one is found. It common to find multiple Morels in the same location.
