Is this the only Nazi memorial in London?

"Giro the Nazi Dog" is considered to be the only Nazi memorial in London although his German owner was not a Nazi at all. Giro was owned by Dr Leopold von Hoesch who was the German Ambassador in London from 1932 to 1936.

Giro died in 1934 from accidental electrocution (contact with an exposed wire) and the small tombstone has the German epitaph "Giro: Ein treuer Begleiter" which means "Giro: A true companion".

German Embassy in London

Leopold von Hoesch was a diplomat at the German Embassy in London at 9 Carlton House Terrace. When he died, two years after his beloved pet, he was well-liked by most British statesmen and it was felt he did much to improve relations between Britain and Germany.

When his body was transported from the Embassy to Victoria station, before continuing on to Germany, he was given a state funeral along the way. There was a 19-gun salute in one of the royal parks and he was shown full military honors. His staff at the Embassy all saluted his coffin in what we now consider to be a Nazi salute, and his coffin was draped with a swastika flag. (There is some footage of the funeral.)

At the Embassy, Albert Speer, the Nazi architect, was involved in the building's thorough renovation and the interior boasts a staircase made from Italian marble, which is said to have been donated by Mussolini.

The Germans had to leave when the war started and The Foreign Office used the building from 1939.

They attempted to remove most of the swastikas but apparently there is a border design of swastikas on the floor of one public room. The building is now occupied by the Royal Society.

Location

Waterloo Place / Near 9 Carlton House Terrace, London SW1Y 5AG

It did take me a while to find the tombstone as it's much smaller than normal, but you'll find it under the tree, at the top of the steps, close by the enormous statue of the Duke of York on a tall column. The tombstone is in a small space that was once the grounds of the German Embassy but is not directly in front of 9 Carlton House Terrace; it is the other side of the garage ramp.

Other unusual findings in the area include the London Nose, the World's Smallest Police Station, plus a popular Harry Potter Film Location in London.
