Opposite the Begijnhof Kapel is the current English Reformed Church. Until the late 16th century, this was the only church in the court, and served the beguines with its Catholic masses; however, once the Reformation prohibited all non-Protestant worship, the vacant church was handed over to the English Reform community in 1607. The beguines were thus deprived of a place of worship until the clandestine Begijnhof Kapel (previous slide) was built in 1672.
The English Reformed Church has held services continually since the 17th century; it celebrated its 400th birthday in 2007. In recent decades, it has also established a reputation as a concert venue for chamber music; a calendar of events can be found at the ERC web site.
