How to Use Cheesecloth for Woodworking

    • 1). Wipe sawdust off the surface of sanded wood to prevent it from affecting the quality of the final wood finish. Cheesecloth is very porous and is relatively lint-free. Shake the dust from the cheesecloth regularly to avoid spreading sawdust onto other wood surfaces.

    • 2). Dip a folded piece of cheesecloth into a can of wood stain, and wipe the stain over the surface of the unfinished wood. Wear a pair of latex or blue nitrile gloves to prevent the stain from discoloring your skin and fingernails.

    • 3). Apply wipe-on polyurethane and other wipe-on coatings with a folded piece of cheesecloth. Other wipe-on coating types besides polyurethane include wipe-on lacquer, paste wax, finishing wax, shellac, linseed oil, tung oil, and other liquid, semi-liquid or wax-based wood finishes. A folded piece of cheesecloth can be unfolded and refolded as the wood finish is applied to expose more of the absorbed finishing product as the application process progresses.

    • 4). Spray dust-removing products onto the finished piece of wood and wipe the dust away with a piece of cheesecloth. Rinse the dust out of the cheesecloth, hang it out to dry and reuse the cheesecloth when it is time to dust again.
