- Level 20 is when rogues first acquire the lock-pick ability. At this level they are able to lock-pick containers that are level 100 or lower. Examples of containers at this level are iron lockboxes, which can be rarely found on dead enemies, and large iron-bound chests, which can usually be found in dungeons. Blacksmiths and engineers can unlock these with silver skeleton keys or small seaforium charges that are made at profession level 100.
- Rogues who are level 40 can unlock chests that are level 100 to 200. Blacksmiths and engineers can make Truesilver skeleton keys and large seaforium charges with a profession level of 200. The highest level of chest that can be lock-picked at this level is the large Mithril-bound chest, found in the higher level classic dungeons.
- By level 60 rogues can open any containers that are level 300 and below. At profession level 275, blacksmiths can make Arcanite skeleton keys, and engineers can make powerful seaforium charges. Any container above level 250 will be found in the Burning Crusade expansion, such as the bound Fel iron chests or the Eternium lockboxes.
- This set of containers is from the later part of the Burning Crusade expansion and all of the Wrath of the Lich King expansion. Rogues must be level 80 to open level-400 containers. Blacksmiths and engineers must reach a profession level of 425, where they can create Obsidium skeleton keys and volatile Seaforium blast packs in order to open containers of this level. The level-350 bound Adamantite chest is the highest level of chest in the game.
- This is the highest tier of lock-picking; it allows players to pick any locked container in the game. Rogues must reach the highest player level of 85 to lock-pick level-425 containers, while blacksmiths and engineers will already have the ability to unlock these containers with the Obsidium skeleton keys and volatile seaforium blast packs from the previous tier. Locked containers at this level can be found only on the bodies of high-level creatures or by pick-pocketing high-level humanoids.
