How to Write Your School's History

    • 1). Go into your school library. Ask the librarian to direct you to any old school records or town records. Look over the records, and take notes about important names, dates and events.

    • 2). Search for relevant history about your school building. If the building once served another purpose, such as an old World War II bunker or a warehouse, search for information regarding its history.

    • 3). Go to a county library or city hall. Ask a librarian or attendant to point you toward the town history section. Look through the books and records and select any that are relevant to your school's history. Skim through the books and records, pulling out any relevant history about the school's past and its buildings' history. Take detailed notes, making sure to include dates.

    • 4). Compile all of the notes about the school's history into a timeline. This timeline will be the outline for the report on your school's history.

    • 5). Divide the school history from your timeline into important stages. Give each stage a name and a date bracket. These will be chapters or subheads for your report, and will help you to keep your report ordered and interesting, rather than long-winded and rambling.

    • 6). Write out each portion of the school's history under the correct subhead, using your timeline as a guide. Stick very close to the facts --- in a historical report there is no room for artistic license.
