If you are looking for a worthwhile hobby and you are relatively good with your hands why don't you give some thought to taking up carpentry. You will almost certainly find literally dozens of projects around the house that you are quite capable of doing yourself. You may require further shelves for books for instance that you could quite easily make yourself. You could have a bigger project that you would like doing but have been putting it off because of the cost involved. In fact there are relatively few woodworking projects around the home that you cannot do yourself.
Almost all of the skills relating to woodworking are pretty straightforward. In its most primitive form joinery is merely a matter of taking measurements, cutting to size and then joining the bits together to create the finished article.
If you are building a simple bookcase or shelving unit for instance it would most probably consist of two pieces of timber to create the sides followed by a number of horizontal bits of wood to create the actual shelves themselves. Nearly anyone having a very basic understanding of woodwork can construct a shelving unit so as a first project it is ideal.
Clearly as you progress to more difficult projects a higher level of skill will be needed to ensure that whatever you are building is completed to a reasonable standard.
The point I am attempting to make is that you can start off with small projects and move on to more difficult projects as you develop.
Should you be fortunate enough to have a house with a garden you may possibly have outdoor projects that you want doing. Outside constructions are an excellent starting point for anybody who wants to take up carpentry as a hobby or pastime. Generally speaking you are not attempting to achieve quite such a good finish on outdoor jobs as you would be trying to achieve on jobs inside the house. I am not trying to say that the projects you do outside should not be executed properly but it does give the novice woodworker a little bit more room for error. You wouldn't, for instance, demand the same accuracy and attention to detail on a bird table as you would expect to find on a piece of furniture that was to have pride of place in your lounge.
The sensible approach is to select easy joinery projects at first in order for you to familiarise yourself with the tools you are using and allow you to build up your woodworking skills in stages.
