How to Build Your Own Brick Kiln

    Building a Brick Kiln

    • 1). Obtain a blueprint for a brick kiln or make your own plan. Free plans can be found on the Internet. Decide on the size of your brick kiln and the amount of materials you need before buying.

    • 2). Put on goggles and a mask before you begin.

    • 3). You need two types of bricks to make a simple kiln---corner bricks and side bricks. Cut the corners of the bricks with a saw to ensure a tight fit. The softness of the fire bricks will help make the cutting effortless.

    • 4). Draw the template onto a piece of cardboard using your blueprint to make the base and top of your kiln. Make sure to draw the outline for each brick. Place the bricks one by one on top of the outline and cut them using a saw to conform to the blueprint. Remove the bricks from the cardboard.

    • 5). Place a clear plastic sheet on top of the cardboard template and rearrange one layer of bricks on top. The plastic sheet prevents the mortar from sticking to the template.

    • 6). Construct the body of the kiln by building layer upon layer of bricks in a staggered pattern. Cement the bricks together using a ½-inch layer of mortar between each brick and on top of the entire layer of bricks. Use a trowel to evenly spread the mortar. Use your trowel to wipe off the excess that oozes down the sides of the bricks.

    • 7). Make two grooves horizontally all the way around the inside walls of the bricks to accommodate the coil.

    • 8). Complete the body of the kiln according to the design. Leave it for at least 24 hours. Inspect all areas to see if more mortar is required. Allow the kiln to dry again if you add more mortar.

    • 9). Attach the control box on the outside of the kiln according to your blueprint. Put the coils into the grooves. Drill a hole for the coils to pass through and attach to the control box. Hire an electrician, if necessary, to help you connect the ground wire to the screw.

Place the kiln on a metal sheet and put another metal sheet on top of the kiln. Turn on the power to see if the coils are heating properly.
