- 1). Determine what you need to measure in linear feet. For example, if you know the square footage of a room, you may need to figure just the width of the room to know if your bed will fit there. You can always convert square feet to either the corresponding width or length of an area.
- 2). Obtain the missing value of the conversion equation. Square feet = length (linear feet) x width (linear feet). You must have two values to complete the calculation. In the example, you are trying to determine the width. Therefore, you must obtain the length. Use the tape measure to measure the length of the room, and record this value.
- 3). Write down the values in your equation. This will make it easier when you are ready to calculate. For instance, if the square footage is 300 and the length you found is 7, your equation will be 300 square feet = 7 feet (x). You must divide the square footage by the length value to get the width value.
- 4). Log onto a free online calculator website (see Resources) to do the calculation.
- 5). Enter the value in square feet (300), using either your mouse or number keys.
- 6). Click the division sign.
- 7). Enter the value of the length or width (7).
- 8). Click the equal sign. The result displayed is your answer (42.9)--the width or length of the area in linear feet.
