Detroit, Michigan, is seated in the Midwest region of the United States and is home to numerous bike trails for residents and visitors. Bicycling is not only beneficial for cardiovascular health, but it can make a major impact on the environment by reducing carbon emissions produced by motorized vehicles. - The Downriver Linked Greenways in Detroit offers nearly 30 miles of bicycle trails in the downriver part of Detroit, Michigan. The North-South Connector Trail follows a 16 mile path through eight different communities and offers access to the Detroit River International Wildlife Refuge. The Detroit Heritage River Water Trail offers 110 miles of bike trails that spotlight the nature of Detroit and nearby cities as well as the Humbug Marsh and Island. The Downriver Linked Greenways has a wide variety of trails to accommodate bicyclers of all skill levels.
- Two and a half miles of the Detroit East Riverfront bike trail is open to local bicyclers and spans from Gabriel Richard Park to the Ambassador Bridge. The Detroit Riverfront is a local attraction for residents and visitors and it sponsors an annual festival with food, activities and music. On Thursdays, bicyclers can enjoy live concerts at the Omni Detroit at River Place Patio. Other concerts are held along the riverfront at various locations. Bicyclers can stop at cafés along the route or enjoy the location’s Gabriel Richard Park.
- The William G. Milliken State Park and Harbor is located in downtown Detroit on Atwater Street and is considered to be an urban state park. The park has 31 total accessible acres and offers trails that can be utilized by bicyclers. All trails in the state park are located near the water and offer opportunities for outdoor camping as well. According to the Michigan Department of Natural Resources, bicycles are permitted on all the non-paved and paved roads in the park. Select paths are designated for bicyclers only. Visitors are advised to use caution when selecting a mountain bike trail, as they are situated on rugged terrain and are more difficult than a standard bike trail.
