- Ringworm causes red, raised patches of skin. In people, these patches are often ring-shaped, but this isn't the case with animals.
- Ringworm usually causes hair loss, and the hair will fall out in patches. Hair will break off on the fungal patches. You may see short, broken hairs on your animal around the area that is infected.
- Some pets will experience a more severe reaction to ringworm, resulting in scaly, oozing patches of skin. Some animals are less reactive, and will show few symptoms.
- Ringworm may or may not cause itching. Some animals with sensitive skin will lick and rub the lesions, but many animals are unaffected.
- Ringworm often shows up as bald spots around the face, ears, tail and feet of animals. Ringworm is more common in young animals, especially kittens.
- Treatment for ringworm is available for all animals. An oral anti-fungal will be prescribed, and all bedding and living areas should be be cleaned and disinfected to prevent spread or reinfection.
