Chihuahuas wearing clothes is a pretty common sight nowadays. Almost every time I go to my city's dog park, I'll spot least one. If you've never owned a Chihuahua, you may wonder why people dress their Chihuahuas up. Without giving much thought, many people may think Chihuahuas wearing clothes is a silly idea. After all, they're dogs, not people. But, owners have been dressing up their pets for quite some time and Chihuahuas actually benefit from the extra layers of clothing.
If you're wondering how exactly a Chihuahua benefits from wearing clothes, then let me explain – Chihuahuas originate in the state of Chihuahua, Mexico. As you may expect, it's quite hot in this region and their winter here isn't very cold to say the least. In turn, Chihuahuas were never bred to survive in cold temperatures. When people live with their Chihuahuas in some of the northern states of the U.S., or even middle states, it's advised they put a warm shirt or sweater on them during the winter. Taking your Chihuahua outside with no protection when the temperature is below 50 degrees Fahrenheit can be dangerous.
If you're looking to warm you're Chihuahua during cold winter days, you should try to get a sweater made from either cotton, wool, or a cotton wool blend. There are many reputable Chihuahua clothing designers who make some superb sweaters that are super soft, comfortable, and warm. An alternative to a sweater is a hoodie. Many owners forget about warm hoodies when it comes to shopping for clothes. If you don't know what it is, then let me explain – a hoodie is like a doggie sweatshirt with a hooded top. By wearing one, your Chihuahua can keep both their body and head warm, and of course they look cute too.
Since Spring time is right around the corner, owners may want to prepare some lighter clothes for their Chihuahuas. Having your Chihuahua wear clothes outside of winter isn't necessary as long as the temperature is warm, but it gives you a chance to have a bonding moment with your Chi. It may not sound like much, but just spending the time dressing your tiny canine companion up with build a relationship between the two of you and create memories that will last a lifetime.
Some people may have trouble getting their Chihuahua to enjoy getting dressed up. Remember, you never want to force your Chihuahua to do something they are obviously uncomfortable doing. So instead, try to make them enjoy dress up time a bit more by giving them love, praise, and a treat when you dress them up. Trust me, you're Chihuahua will soon be getting excited every time you get out their clothes!
