You can't deny it: TVs are expensive. Even if you find a good TV on sale, you're still likely to dish out between 700 and 1000 dollars for anything decently sized. Still, if there was a time of the year when you could buy a TV for the cheapest price or a convenient time, you wouldn't look the other way, would you?
If a lot of people are buying TVs at a similar time, it's safe to assume that there is some sort of deal going on, right? Wrong. According to a chart by Google, most people are buying TVs around the months of November and December: holiday season. Just because a lot of people are purchasing TVs doesn't necessarily mean that is the best time to buy. In fact, most companies will hike up the prices of TVs around the holidays because they know that a lot of people will be looking for TVs on sale.
€It's not in the retailers' and manufacturers' best interest to give you the best price at precisely the period in time when you're most interested in buying,€ says Stephen Baker, vice president of industry analysis at the NPD Group.
Some people may argue that Black Friday would be the best time to purchase a TV, since Black Friday deals are most widely known. Rock bottom pricing on mass market TVs IS better around Black Friday, where retailers run promotions just to lure you through the door. You might find a discount on a high-end TV, but you're still going to end up spending around 2,000 dollars. Jon Abt of Abt Electronics admits, €to be honest, manufacturers run similar types of promotions at other times.€
The best time to buy a TV (and get a good deal) is oddly enough in February or March. These are the months when the latest TVs are beginning to ship out to retailers, which means the older TVs are going on sale. And by old, it could be only a year old, so still a great TV in prime condition. Since the holidays have just ended, it is a good time for retailers to try to boost sales by giving away the best deals. For most TV models, there aren't that many dramatic improvement or new features added from year to year.
So don't be fooled by Holiday pricing or Black Friday deals: the best time to buy your new TV is right before the new models come out in the spring. You can use your money from your tax refund to help buy the TV on sale€¦. And just in time for baseball season.
