Scooter tricks for beginners are reminiscent of moves derived from the extreme sports of freestyle BMX and skateboarding, yet modified to the performance of scooters. Originally mocked as a sport for those who could not skateboard, "scootering" is quickly becoming an extreme sport of its own, according to the website Scooter Tricks. Participants in the sport ride at skate parks and on the streets, performing impressive tricks such as back flips and tail whips. Before getting to that level, however, you need to learn the basics. - To perform a wheelie (similar to the bike trick), push off at a moderate pace and place your feet near the rear of the scooter. Pull up on your handlebars as you release some of the pressure off your front foot. Keep the back wheel on the ground as you lift the front wheel. Make sure you don't step on the brakes with your back foot. Balance your scooter in a wheelie for an extended period of time in order to do what is called a "manual."
- Bunny hops can be done at any speed; beginners, however, should ride at a moderate pace. Bend your knees toward the board of your scooter. Jump up with your legs and pull up on the handlebars in order to keep the scooter against your feet as both your body and the scooter launch into the air. Land with your wheels pointing straight in order to avoid falling.
- The jay hop is a combination of a wheelie and a bunny hop. Ride at a moderate pace, bring your feet toward the rear of the board and lift your handlebars to a wheelie position. From there, jump up and pull up on the handlebars to execute a bunny hop. Keep the front wheel higher than the rear wheel and land to finish the jay hop.
- As you progress with your beginner skills, you'll want to start adding more technical tricks. To do a tail whip, ride at a moderate pace and do a bunny hop. Once you are in the air, use your back foot to kick the board so that it spins 360 degrees. Keep your knees bent as the board is spinning, and once it swings back into place, catch it with your feet and land, going in a straight line.
