- 1). Take a week's worth of kitchen waste and weigh it to estimate your average weekly composting needs. Do not weigh anything that does not compost, such as dairy, fish, meats, fat and bones, plastics, rubber. Divide the weekly weight by seven to get your daily food waste average.
- 2). Peruse a local gardening magazine to find earthworm dealers in your area. Alternatively, call your local university extension service for information on worm dealers.
- 3). Order 2,000 worms per pound of average daily food waste. Order only the redworm (Eisenia foetida or Lumbricus rubellus), called the red wriggler: These are the best worms for the job.
