How to Landscape Around Mulberry Trees

    • 1). Dig a 3 to 4 inch hole around the mulberry tree to test the soil's pH. Mulberry trees prefer to grow in a pH range between 6.5 and 7.5. Gardeners who want to grow grass around their plant may have to alter the range using soil amendments. Most grass types grow in a pH range between 6.0 and 7.0. A majority of trees, shrubs and flowers grow in mulberry's pH range. Collect half a cup of soil to send to your local cooperative extension office. Wait three to four weeks for results.

    • 2). Spread limestone around the mulberry tree to correct a soil ph less than 6.5 if you want to plant grass. Sulfur is used to lower a soil pH higher than 7.0.

    • 3). Pruning the mulberry tree gains better access around the tree for planting. Mulberry trees produce a sap causing rashes, which means its lower branches must be removed for tending grass or other plants. Make pruning cuts next to the tree's branch collar or the swelling that attaches the branch to the main trunk when removing lower limbs.

    • 4). Spread a 3- to 4-inch layer of mulch out 3 to 4 feet from the base of the mulberry tree before planting grass or ornamentals. Mulberry trees decline in health if forced to compete with plants growing next to their base.

    • 5). Grow shade-resistant plants around the mulberry tree. Shade-resistant grass types include St. Augustine, zoysia, fescue and Kentucky bluegrass. Shade-tolerant ornamental plants tolerant include impatiens, Japanese spurge, scillas, snowdrops, coleus, wax begonias and dwarf salvias.
