Working as a self-employed individual may be right for you if you need extra cash and have a schedule that would eliminate your ability to work in a retail store or other type of office. Some people desire to work at home due to physical problems that prevent them from commuting to work or committing to a set schedule due to their health conditions. Others choose to be self-employed just so they can be flexible to attend their children's functions. Regardless of your reasons, many jobs exist that can be done at home as your time, schedule or health allows. - Apply to be a freelance writer if you have a talent in this area. Many places hire writers to write articles for websites or to optimize search engines. Call small newspapers or churches to see if they need a freelance writer to help with articles for weekly publications, newsletters or bulletins. Utilize a good speaking voice and telephone skills to become a personal assistant, concierge, call center, answering service or customer service operator. Also, offer to help businesses complete clerical tasks during the summer months or holidays
- Use your care giving skills. Many elderly people hire people to do light housekeeping, companionship, cooking or to walk their dogs.
- Cook for special occasions if you enjoy preparing meals. If you have an abundance of appetizer and dessert recipes that your friends always rave over, this may be something you can create an income with. Spread the word that you are available to cater parties or special events.
- If you have a avid interest in antiques or collectible items, try selling them online at auction sites, such as eBay, Craigslist or Half.com. Search garage and estate sales for bargains that you can sell for a higher price online.
