- The calf muscles extend the toe, to allow you to push off while walking. If you walk less, you'll use your calves less and they, along with the other leg muscles, will atrophy.
- Your calves need to push off the entire weight of your body. If you weigh less, you calves, and other muscles, won't need to work as hard.
- Muscle is active tissue that burns calories 24/7. When you cut calories your body will break down muscle tissue, all over, to conserve energy.
- Those who lift weights can focus more on high repetitions of light weights. This type of exercise builds muscle endurance, not bulk.
- Actively trying to lose muscle mass can have detrimental effects. Less muscle mass means a slower metabolism. Muscles also generate heat, contribute to bone density and are extremely important to movement and balance--especially as we age.
