- 1). Research the industry you are seeking employment in, and the company you want to work for. Look through websites such as Salary.com and Payscale.com to get an idea of salaries for the position you want and the experience you have.
- 2). Offer a salary range rather than a concrete number. There is no rule about how big a range to use, but the higher the overall salary the bigger gap you can get away with. Base your range on responsibilities of the position as well as any research you have performed. This way you won't pin yourself down to any one number and will still have room to negotiate when the time comes.
- 3). Keep your salary requirement information close to the main bullet points of the cover letter. If the money you are asking for and your qualifications can be seen in the same view, it will help justify what you are asking.
