- 1). Copy all the files from your current hard drive to another location such as a CD or DVD. You can't transfer the operating system or the programs; they will have to be reinstalled. Find all of your data files and documents and burn them to a CD using a CD burning program or Windows Explorer. In Windows Explorer you just copy the files to the CD drive with a blank CD in the drive and then choose "File" and "Burn these files to CD."
- 2). Check the type of hard drive you have. You manual or your computer manufacturer should list whether it is an IDE drive or a SATA drive. Purchase the correct laptop size drive type from a computer retailer.
- 3). Open the compartment cover on the back of the laptop that covers the hard drive. You may have to consult your manual for the exact location. The compartment will be held in place by several small Phillips screws. Unscrew them and remove the compartment cover.
- 4). Disconnect the hard drive cable or cables. There will be one or two cables connecting the drive for power and data transfer. Insert the cables into the new drive, put the new drive in place and put the cover back in place and screw it on.
- 5). Install Windows. You will need the restore CD or the Windows installation CD. Restart the computer with the CD in the drive and follow the on-screen instructions to install the operating system after the computer boots. After the operating system is installed, copy your files onto the hard drive from the CD you made.
