Diet Guidelines For People With Diabetes - What to Eat, Not to Eat, and Why

One of the genetic diseases that we have these days is diabetes.
The way it is manifested is usually dependent on the environment.
What this means in simple terms is that one cannot be able to prevent it if the genes are inborn but it is possible to put the disease under control by having a good lifestyle and maintaining a healthy diet.
There are a number of dietary rules which when followed can enable put the disease in check and will prevent severe manifestation of the same.
It is advisable that the diet be one that is balanced and nutritious.
The unfortunate thing is that most people these days have unhealthy eating habits and thus putting the disease under control becomes a bit of a difficult task.
A change in lifestyle will be needed in order to put the disease under control.
This calls for great sacrifice but in the long run it is worth it.
One of the first and basic rules of people with diabetes is that they should eat meals regularly and the foods should be taken in small portions.
This is also called portion control.
This is in addition to the general guidelines about nutrition and controlling carbohydrate intake.
Starchy foods can also be taken but in small portions.
At the end of the day, make sure that not too much starch has been taken in.
Foods that are known to be rich in starch are cereals, bread, potatoes and some vegetables.
Diabetics are advised to eat a lot of fruits and vegetables.
The least that should be taken of these kinds of foods is five servings of each every day.
The simplest way to go about this is by eating regularly throughout the day by having small portions of fruits during breaks such as tea break and having vegetables at dinner and lunch.
If you would want to consume more vegetables, the best way to go about it would be to drink soups, use stir fries or add chili.
This can be used for the evening or lunch meals.
One thing that is surprising is that sugary foods are allowed but only in moderation.
These foods should be taken no more than twice in a week.
One way of reducing the amount of sugary foods we eat is by cutting down on the amount of dessert that we have by half.
Now that you have the above advice, it is up to you to take the necessary step towards controlling your diabetes and getting a healthy life.
