      AM General began marketing the Hummer brand in 1992 when it began manufacturing a civilian model of the vehicle. General Motors purchased the brand name in 1998, thus making the 1997 Hummer Hardtop four-wheel drive sport utility vehicle one of the last models manufactured under the AM General name. After the purchase, GM released three vehicles: the Hummer H1, H2 and H3. The 1997 Hummer has some unique specifications to the vehicle itself not found under its previous AM General brand.

    Engine and Transmission

    • The 1997 Hummer comes standard with a V8 turbo diesel, 6.5-liter engine capable of generating 170 horsepower at 3,400 RPM. At 1,700 RPM it generates 290 foot-pounds of torque. The diesel starter is waterproof, allowing the 1997 Hummer to ford through 6 inches more water than its gas-powered counterpart. The fuel induction is electric. The 1997 Hummer has an automatic transmission and four-wheel drive.

    • The 1997 Hummer has a length of 184.5 inches and a width of 86.5 inches. It stands 75 inches tall with a curb weight of 6,290 pounds. The vehicle has a wheelbase of 130 inches and is equipped with 37X12 50R16 tires. The fuel capacity for the 1997 Hummer is 25 gallons.     Exterior Features
