We all think that when we meditate, it is in silence.
However, we can use our other senses during meditation to enhance the experience such as incense, imagery, or music.
When it comes to a sound other than music, the experience becomes deeper or more intense depending on the kind of sound that is used and for the purpose it is trying to reach.
One of those sounds that is most commonly used and heard in meditation, especially in Buddhist meditation is the sound of Ohm (A-U-M).
This is commonly used in Hindu and Buddhist forms of meditation.
In a form of Japa meditation, Ohm is used with one intonation helping us center our awareness of being.
Dr.
Wayne Dyer has a CD called Getting in the Gap in which the sound of Ohm serves such a purpose.
But where does Ohm come from? Originally, it is thought to be the first sound created in our Universe and comes originally from Sanskrit writings.
Because the sound creates waves of vibration, in the East, they believe that that sound is the foundation of everything.
In other words we are connecting ourselves to the original forms and intent of creation as well as to the origins and base of who we are as a person.
If a single mantra, sound, or word is sounded out, the mandala are made and prayer wheels as well as rosaries are used to help in focusing and the enhancement of concentration.
When involved with the sound of Ohm or sometimes Ah in some cases, the practitioner experiences a depth of awareness that is deep and etheric.
It stimulates our wisdom and knowledge.
After performing this form of meditation we are more awake, aware and calm.
When broken down the initial sound of Ah represents birth or creation.
O represents control especially as it is coming out of the mouth.
The MM as aspect represents progression because it is continual.
The sound of OM can be chanted in any volume or tone that one prefers or is physically able to do.
There are high OMs and there are low ones.
It all depends on what your intent is and in some cases, what part of the body you would like to heal and balance specifically.
It is a sound that is unique to our universe and is effective no matter how you do it or where.
As long as you have built up awareness and healing yourself, this
