Great Danes - Gentle Giants With a Regal Appearance

Great Danes are one of the more popular breeds in the world of dogs.
Known for their gentle ways as well as an intimidating stature, one of their most striking features is pure size.
Great Danes are one of the tallest breeds, (Irish Wolfhounds tend to be taller) with a mild temperament and gentle personality.
It's understandable why this breed is one of the most beloved and a pet many would love to own.
Great Danes also have special place in history, being known as an excellent hunter of wild boar as well as a guardian.
Because of their loyalty, it is no wonder that owners all over the world have grown so attached to the breed and consider them as members of the family.
Consequently, their health and well-being becomes a huge concern and their owners often go the extra mile to provide all the care and attention they need.
For a large breed, Great Danes have a slow metabolism.
Because of this, they need regular exercise.
They need this exercise in order to remain healthy, alert, and ready to enjoy quality time with their owners.
As in any animal, there are also several conditions and diseases that Great Danes are prone to.
These include bloating, congenital heart diseases, and hip dysplasia.
The last condition is considered a hereditary condition among this breed, although a previous injury can also be the cause.
Though rarely fatal, hip dysplasia can cause a lot of pain and discomfort.
It starts with a deformity in the hip socket that slowly deteriorates, affecting the whole joint area, including the cartilage and synovial fluid.
Owner of Great Danes should be aware of this particular condition and take notice if their dog exhibits any symptoms of arthritis resulting from hip dysplasia.
Signs include an unwillingness to jump or run, changes in their gait, or perhaps a slight limp.
Upon observing these symptoms, if they persist, owners would do well to have the condition diagnosed by a veterinarian as soon as possible.
Typically, hip dysplasia is diagnosed through x-ray.
With early detection and diagnosis, there is a good chance of getting this under control and prevent further deterioration.
A natural substance found to provide pain relief and rehabilitation to Great Danes afflicted with arthritis is glucosamine.
Often marketed in the form of glucosamine sulfate, this nutritional supplement has demonstrated remarkable results by providing pain relief.
Studies have shown that Glucosamine taken in conjunction with Chondroitin is more effective.
Glucosamine needs to be administered on a daily basis in order for your pet to maintain maximum benefits.
Glucosamine therapy is a lifelong treatment, but the expense compared to other treatments is minimal.
Maintaining regular exercise and good nutrition is recommended and watching your dog's weight will help them reduce the load afflicted joints carry.
