South Dakota's Cigar Shops

Cigars conjure up certain themes, such as a love of life and a not-to-be-tangled-with attitude. Cigars can contain up to 20 times the tobacco of a cigarette, and may take more than an hour to fully smoke, so they are serious business. Is it then any surprise that a state such as South Dakota, with its larger-than-life landmarks, should be a perfect spot to satisfy a cigar hankering? The state that keeps watch over the remains of Wild Bill Hickok offers several outlets for cigar shopping.

    Deadwood - Black Hills

    • A national historic landmark and a mere 20 minutes from Sturgis, home of the legendary annual motorcycle rally, the town of Deadwood is a critical destination for South Dakota good times. At Deadwood Tobacco Co. and Cigar Bar in the Black Hills, you can't escape the Wild West whether you browse the largest humidor in South Dakota or study the bar's funky turreted brick architecture and historic tunnels. Carrying more than 50 brands of cigars, from the always sought-after Padron to its own home-rolled brand, Deadwood Tobacco also offers a basement smoking lounge and sports bar where this old mining town's original jail once housed the good, the bad and the ugly.

    Sioux Falls - Southeast Corner

    • Fogies Stogies in Sioux Falls is not just a cigar outfitter with a catchy name: it offers the stogie shopper about 75 brands with multiple sizes and variations of each. In South Dakota's southeast region, near both the Minnesota and Iowa borders, Sioux Falls has several activities to fill in the time between puffing your premium cigar finds, including casinos, museums, wildlife sanctuaries and a zoo. Fogies Stogies is part of Fogies Liquor Gallery.

Rapid City - Mount Rushmore Area

    • No visit to South Dakota really counts without a look at Mount Rushmore, and Rapid City is a perfect base from which to take in this monument, along with Custer State Park and Crazy Horse Memorial. Before leaving the state's foremost attractions, a trip to the Tinder Box in Rapid City is in order. Pioneered in 1928, Tinder Box is part of a chain that was once the country's largest pipe and tobacco dealer, but you won't feel like you're in a cookie-cutter store. The Rapid City location is in a quaint brick storefront with an original tiled facade and offers a few dozen cigar brands, including the Tinder Box's own offering. An assorted selection of pipes, tobacco, smoking accessories, gifts, bottled wines and an on-site lounge are all added draws.
