How to Choose the Right HD TV

    • 1

Where are you putting the HD TV?
Think about the size of the room you are putting the TV in. If you are going to be sitting closer to the TV, you will want a smaller HD TV. I know this sounds simple, but many people don't consider it when choosing a TV. Also, if you are going to mount the TV on the wall, consider the size of where you will mount it to make sure it will fit. Smaller TVs tend to work well in bedrooms, guest rooms, and the kitchen.

What is the lighting like in the room?
The lighting in the room makes a huge impact on the quality of the picture on your HD TV. There are big differences between Plasma and LCD TVs depending on how much control you have over the lighting. If you have a well lit room (lots of natural sunlight) or prefer to watch the TV with lots of lights on, an LCD TV is your best option. The anti-reflective screens perform better in well lit rooms. If you tend to watch TV only at night or with the lights dimmed or off, a Plasma TV is your best option. The image will be richer and deeper than an LCD.

How close will you be sitting?
There are actually optimal viewing distances for different size TVs. If you are too close or too far you will not get the best viewing experience. This is especially true if you are sitting too close. Being to close to a large TV will ruin the picture. Bigger is not always better!! Here are some tips:
2.6 ft - 5.2 ft your best bet is a 13 inch TV; 3.8 ft- 7.6 ft your best bet is a 19 inch TV; 4 ft to 8 ft your best bet is a 20 inch TV; 4.8 ft to 9.6 ft your best bet is a 24 inch TV; 5.4 ft to 10.8 ft your best bet is a 27 inch TV; 6.4 ft to 12.8 ft your best bet is a 32 inch TV
7.2 ft to 14.8 your best bet is a 36 inch TV; 8 ft to 16 ft your best bet is a 40 inch TV.

** Distances overlap a little so it is up to your personal preference and cost on whether to go a little bigger or smaller. Bring a measuring tape to the store and stand that far away when choosing.

      What is Your Budget?
Set this before you even start looking for a TV. You do not want to choose a TV that is out of your budget and will stress you out later on. Also, consider how much money you will spend monthly on cable or satellite and include that in your costs.
