NDT (Non-Destructive Testing)

Definition: NDT is a system used to test component's serviceability; the component will not be damaged (destroyed) during the procedure. Typically, motorcycle component parts are NDT tested by one or more of the following methods: Dye Penetrant, Magnetic Particle Analysis, X-Ray, Thermo-graphic, and Ultrasound.

Examples: Dye Penetrant (commonly referred to as dye pen) is used to check for surface flaws and cracks in ferrous and non ferrous parts.

A typical usage is testing pistons for hairline cracks. To test the piston, it is first sprayed with a dye that penetrates into the aluminum. A developer, in a contrasting color, is then sprayed over the piston. Any flaws will show up as an irregular dark colored line (crack).
