How to Tell If a Montblanc Pen Is Counterfeit

    • 1). Examine the nib, the metal tip on the end of the pen where the ink flows. The nib should be stamped with the number 4810, which is the height of Europe's highest mountain, Mont Blanc. If this number is not on the nib, the pen is likely not authentic Montblanc.

    • 2). Look at the barrel, which should be made of resin and be smooth and shiny. If the barrel appears to be dull or uneven in color and shine, it is probably not a real Montblanc pen. Montblanc uses only high-quality materials, including diamond, gold and platinum.

    • 3). Inspect the box in which the pen came. All Montblanc pens should be in a box with a white snowflake star. If the star is blurry, sloppy or off-centered, it may indicate a replica.

    • 4). Look for a serial number on the right side of the clip ring, which has been a feature of Montblanc pens since 1991. In addition, Montblanc pens of any date should have the company trademark "Pix."

    • 5). Examine the pen cap for an inlaid six-point star at the top of the cap. If the pen does not have a star, or if the star has blurred edges or has a different number of points, be wary that the pen is a replica.
