- No matter what type of Schlage lock you are installing, you will need a Phillips or flat-head screwdriver. The strike plate, latch, door handle and locking mechanism is tightened together with screws. Using a cordless drill with a screwdriver bit is not recommended because it can strip the screw when tightening down the components. A long-shafted screwdriver is best.
- A tape measure will be required if the door does not have pre-cut lock holes. Most doors already have holes cut for the Schlage locks and deadbolts. If the door does not have these holes cut, you will need to measure the door and door frame for placement of the Schlage lock. A standard Schlage lock will require three different measurements; the door handle, handle latch and strike plate on the door frame.

A drill will be required to cut the holes for the Schlage locks. A cordless and corded drill is part of the tools required to cut the holes for the Schlage lock. A hole saw and drill bit kit will also be required. The hole saw and drill bit have different diameter saws that attach to the drill bit, so the correct size hole can be cut into the door for the lock. All new Schlage locks come with a hole template that can be attached to the door, centering on the measurement point. - A wood chisel will be required to cut out the notches for the strike plate and latch. Again, the Schlage lock has a template that comes with each lock assembly so you can notch out the correct size for the strike plate. Take the template and center it along the middle of the measurement point. Mark the template with a carpenter's pencil, then chisel out the notch with a wood chisel and hammer.
