- 1). Sketch the intended structure of the tank in a diagram for reference. Highlight dimensions and key considerations, as you will use this design when purchasing materials.
- 2). Buy an acrylic tube with a thickness of 5mm and around 500mm in diameter. This height and thickness should be strong enough to support the weight of the water inside. For the base, purchase acrylic sheet 10mm thick.
- 3). Draw the shape of the base on the protective covering on the acrylic sheet. Cut around the marked shape with a jigsaw to create the base. File, sand and polish the edges.
- 4). Remove the protective sheet from one side of the base piece. Place the acrylic tube carefully on top of the base and, using a syringe, apply the solvent cement between the base piece and the edges of the acrylic tube. Do this carefully, not allowing any dripping of the solvent which can scar the acrylic. Try practicing sealing joints on scrap acrylic before trying to join the walls to the base.
- 5). Allow the solvent to set a minimum of three to fours hours to allow the joint between the tube and base to seal and dry.
- 6). File, sand and polish any edges which are still rough.
- 7). Apply the aquarium sealant to the internal joint between the tank and the base. Carefully smooth the sealant with your finger and leave for a few days to cure. The longer you leave the seals to dry before adding water, then the better they will hold.
- 8). Strip the tank of any remaining protective covering. Rinse the tank thoroughly. Fill it with water and check for leaks. If there are any, empty and dry before repeating step 7. When you are satisfied that the seals are good, add the water and your aquarium attractions.
