- 1). Sand the pinewood wedge until it is smooth. If you are cutting the wedge yourself you can shape it anyway you'd like. You can find wedges in the shape of cars already cut for you online. A wooden door stop will work as well.
- 2). Paint the wedge the desired color. You can add embellishments like racing stripes or numbers with paint as well. Stickers, glitter or even googly eyes can add a personal touch to the toy car.
- 3). Measure and mark where you'd like to put the wheels. The size of your car and your wheels will determine where the wheels will go. A general rule of thumb is to position the wheels one-fifth the length of the car from the front, and one-fifth from the back. The wheels can be found online or at your local hobby or craft store.
- 4). Bore a hole that is slightly smaller than your nail for the axles. These axles are the nails. You can lubricate your axles by rubbing graphite on them before nailing them into place. Insert the nail through the hole in the center of the wheel and push the axle into place. You might need to tap it into place with a hammer. Don't tap so hard that the wheel doesn't turn.
