Developed for kids ages six months to six years old, Baby Learns Alphabet and Phonics introduces children to the alphabet and phonics using computer animation and live action footage.

The video displays both upper and lowercase letters of the alphabet, along with computer animation, pictures, or live footage of objects beginning with each letter.

The names of the objects are also spelled out. Classical music plays softly in the background as the letters, letter sounds, and words are spoken by a narrator.

One of the more straight forward alphabet DVDs I have seen, Baby Learns the Alphabet and Phonics effectively teaches kids about the alphabet and phonics. The video highlights each letter of the alphabet and displays objects that begin with the letter. The letters, shown in both upper and lowercase, are large and easy to read, as are the words that correspond with the objects.

In addition to seeing the letters and words, kids will hear the letter names, letter sounds, and the object names. This approach allows kids to see how letters and phonics work together, giving them a sense of the big picture, and aiding them in making the connection that letters make words. Because of the multifaceted approach, children of varying ages and stages will benefit from watching the DVD. Even kids who know the letters and the corresponding sounds will learn from the words and objects that are shown on the DVD.

The audio on the DVD is slightly inconsistent at times, and some of the animation looks very computerized, but the DVD is otherwise very well put together. The live action shots of animals really make the DVD stand out. Overall, children will enjoy the Baby Learns the Alphabet and Phonics, and it is a powerful educational tool for parents and teachers.

Baby Learns Alphabet and Phonics - Expand Upon the Curriculum

• For babies and small children, find some items around the house that are similar to those shown on the DVD - such as balls, bears, or airplanes - and let the kids hold and look at the objects as they are shown on the screen.
• For older kids, pick a letter of the alphabet and go around the house finding objects that begin with the letter, including some of those shown on the DVD.
• Help kids learn about the letters by engaging senses besides just sight and sound. Make a large letter on the floor using masking tape, and let them walk on it and dance around it. Or, allow kids to glue macaroni or other items to a letter drawn on a piece of paper. Also, letter cookie cutters are available in many stores, so kids can help make the letter and then eat it!
