In the early 90's I and my family moved to the Virgin Islands where we lived for a little over seven years.
We moved there from Arizona changing from an environment of desert to semi tropical beachfront life.
What a change! While there, I learned to scuba dive.
Something completely foreign to me.
You don't get much opportunity to scuba dive in Arizona.
I and a another friend who happened to be from Arizona also, took lessons and learned how to scuba dive.
All our diving experience to that point had been with a dive instructor.
He knew where we were at all times and how long we could stay down and where the dangers were in the vast ocean around us.
We were at peace with him.
One day after certifying, my friend and I decided to go out on our own near where we lived to dive the Salt River Wall.
A beautiful place where you could actually dive along a vertical cliff that went as deep as you dared to go.
The scenery was beautiful and the fish and coral life absolutely amazed us.
We thought we were in "hog heaven" - a common term used in Arizona.
It was time to surface now so we went through the previously learned procedures on how to surface after being under water for over 40 minutes.
All went well on the ascent to the surface only to find out that the only access to the beach was through a shallow coral field.
We looked up and down the shoreline but couldn't find any place to pass through to the beach and so our only choice was through the coral field.
It was one of the worst experiences that I have ever had.
The waves tossed us around like rag dolls, over the sharp coral and sea urchins and, it seemed, every other creature in the ocean.
We were cut up by the coral on our legs and arms that still show the scars of the experience to this day.
Bleeding and demoralized, we made our way back to our place only to find our scuba instructor waiting to see how we had fared.
As soon as he saw us, he knew exactly what had happened.
His comment to us was - "You didn't follow the dive plan did you?" You see where I'm headed with this, don't you? There are lessons in life that need to be learned but it is best that they be learned through mentors (dive instructor if you will).
The internet is very much like the ocean.
It can roll over you and toss you to and fro in such a way as to leave you cut and demoralized mentally and even financially.
