- One of the most basic messages to write on a birthday card is well wishes for the person's birthday. Write about how happy you are that the person is able to enjoy this birthday, and that you hope he has a truly amazing day. Also include well wishes for the year and the future beyond this birthday. For example, you could write "I hope that you go out there and accomplish your goal of starting your business this year."
- Express to the person how much you value him as a friend, family member, lover or other. Go into detail about how he has made your life more special. If there was a time when this person really came through for you in the past year, this is a time to mention how much you are thankful for the act and for having her as a friend. This is best reserved for a parent, significant other or very close friend.
- Humor is very effective in birthday cards. A humorous line can quickly turn her tears into an unforgettable smile that will make her day. If possible, use humor that only you and she would understand (a private joke). Depending on the recipient's mood and sense of humor, you could also inject a witty comment about her age--but keep it lighthearted.
- If you have any news to tell the person that is directly or indirectly related to her, be sure to include it on the birthday card as well. For instance, if you are giving a card to your friend who also invested in your business, you might want to break the news that her investment has finally paid off. This could help to make her birthday that much more special.
